  • Dynaco Stereo 120 (3) and PAT 4 preamp

Dynaco Stereo 120 (3) and PAT 4 preamp

You can purchase each item individually. We have one 120 that we just replaced the coupling caps and resoldered the board as needed. That's $250 Inquire The Dynaco Stereo 120 is an all silicon transistor basic power amplifier for use with separate preamplifiers such as the Dynaco PAT-4 or PAT-5, or for use with tape recorders or tuners such as the FM-5 or AF-6, which have their own volume controls. The unit contains two 60 watt amplifiers on one chassis with a common power supply. Although the Stereo 120 is a solid state device, containing transistors and similar semiconductors, it has been designed to be used under normal conditions without special safety precautions, just as if it were a high grade tube amplifier. Thus it can be connected to source and speaker components and used with confidence in all conventional arrangements. There are no circuit breakers, speaker fuses, or other resettable devices to impede the use of the Stereo 120 under any reasonable conditions of use or abuse. This is achieved by using novel circuits (on which patents are pending) which automatically and instantly protect the amplifier. Specifications Power output: 60 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo) Frequency response: 5Hz to 100kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.5% Damping factor: 40 Input sensitivity: 1.5V Signal to noise ratio: 95dB Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16Ω Semiconductors: 15 x transistors, 15 x diodes Dimensions: 13 x 10.5 x 4 inches Weight: 20lbs Learn More

  • Dynaco ST 150 power amplifier

    Dynaco ST 150 power amplifier

Dynaco ST 150 power amplifier The Dynaco Stereo 150 is a basic two channel power amplifier employing all silicon semiconductors. They include 24 transistors, 2 zener diodes, 16 diodes, and 2 thermal sensors. The output circuitry is of the full complementary symmetry design. The entire amplifier, except for an input network, is direct coupled. It's measured distortion levels approach the threshold of much laboratory test equipment, not only at the commonly specified full power ratings, but more importantly at very low power outputs as well. This is the result of circuit techniques which eliminate any discernible crossover notch at low levels, and contributes to the Stereo 150's freedom from listening fatigue. It's accurate, uncoloured sonics have been achieved on a wide variety of loudspeaker loads, including electrostatics and multiple drivers with complex crossovers. The design of a very fine power amplifier implies the necessity of several protection techniques for the amplifier, and for the speaker load. In addition to the AC line fuse, four separate B+ fuses are supplied. Electronic volt-amp limiting ensures safe operation of the output transistors, and a thermal sensor mounted directly on each output stage reduces the input if high temperature occurs. An unusually large radiating area for the heat fins, which are coupled to an aluminium back panel, form a highly efficient heat sink. Speaker fuses protect the load. The Stereo 150 has been designed as two independent 75 watts (at 8 ohms) amplifying channels with a common power supply having a high degree of inherent regulation. In addition, where higher powers or higher volt-amp capabilities are required for lower load impedances, easy internal restrapping permits monophonic operation for 150 watts output (at 8 ohms). An accessory kit is planned at additional cost for two output meters and meter switching, which includes alternative inserts for the front panel. Specifications Power output: 75 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo) Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.25% Damping factor: 50 Input sensitivity: 1V Signal to noise ratio: 95dB Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16Ω Semiconductors: 24 x transistors, 2 x zener diodes, 16 x diodes, 2 x thermal sensors Dimensions: 14.5 x 13.75 x 7 inches Weight: 29lbs Learn More

  • Duntech Sovereign 2001

    Duntech Sovereign 2001

Duntech Sovereign 2001, one owner pair in oak. They will need to be crated for international shipment and shipment to most US locations The Duntech Sovereign 2001 system carries a list price of $20,000, which includes shipping. It consists of two black towers standing 74 inches high on a 32 x 14-inch base. Each contains two 12-inch woofers, two midrange units and a tweeter in an unusual configuration that creates the impression of all sound issuing from a single point. This results in highly accurate reproduction of the spatial relationships in the sound of the original performance. Based on some highly original theoretical calculations by the Australian physicist John Dunlavy, the Duntech is distinguished by an extraordinary degree of what might be called sheer musicality. • Denon DVD-3800 BDCI

    Denon DVD-3800 BDCI

Denon DVD-3800 BDCI The DVD-3800BDCI ($1,999) is the most expensive single-disc Blu-ray player to date. It is also Denon’s first flagship design. With the DVD-3800BDCI, Denon built on its previous Blu-ray transport, the DVD-2500BTCI (reviewed in Home Theater’s June issue). The DVD-3800BDCI adds full onboard decoding for the advanced audio codecs and a Silicon Optix Realta HQV video-processing suite. It’s also Bonus View (PiP) compliant, but it does not meet the hardware requirements to support BD-Live interactivity. Given the price point, I’m surprised that Denon didn’t offer an upgrade path to BD-Live. With BD-Live support available from the PlayStation 3 and several other standalone players, this may be an issue for consumers who want to take full advantage of the format’s interactive capabilities. The DVD-3800BDCI is certainly one of the largest Blu-ray players out there. It shares its sexy lines and robust fit and finish with the DVD-2500BTCI transport. While the transport offers only a single HDMI output, the new player features a full complement of high-quality analog outputs for both video and audio. It also includes a 7.1-channel analog audio output. The connections on the Denon’s back panel offer the best quality I’ve seen in a Blu-ray player. All of the analog jacks are exceptionally sturdy. Denon did not use the standard stamped lot you’ll find on bargain players. The component video outputs even offer a choice of standard RCA terminals or high-quality BNC connections. On the digital side, you can choose from HDMI, TosLink, and a digital coaxial output. Of course, the HDMI output is the only digital connection that takes advantage of next-gen lossless audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio) at full resolution. The front panel’s elegant curved façade matches the look of Denon’s recent high-end AVR line. There is an SD Card input on the front panel that serves a dual purpose. It enables an increase in onboard memory for the Blu-ray Bonus View PiP interactivity, and you can also use it for music and photo playback. Denon also included a button that selects the output resolution or engages the advanced noise reduction of its HQV video-processing suite. Learn More

  • Dan D'agostino Momentum S250

    Dan D'agostino Momentum S250

Dan D'agostino Momentum S250 silver, retail $35000 The Momentum S250 stereo amplifier delivers the extraordinary sound quality of the Momentum M400 monoblock in a more affordable stereo design. The circuit topology and construction of the stereo amplifier mirror those of the monoblock, using the same ultra-efficient copper heat sinks with venturi cooling, the same 1% metal-film resistors, the same 69 MHz output transistors and the same fully complementary balanced configuration. The result is audio fidelity equaled by no other amplifier—except, of course, the Momentum M400 monoblock itself—and an efficient design that consumes less than 1 watt of power at standby. The new Momentum S250 stereo amplifier receives a power upgrade, now delivering 250 Watts/channel into 8 Ohms. This is up from the original 200 Watt/channel specification. A 20% increase in transformer size, up to 1,800VA, provides the engine for this output power increase. Connected to this larger power source is a new output stage design that includes a number of major enhancements. The driver section underwent a major revision and now features a fully complementary signal path with individual transistors employed for the positive and negative halves of the musical signal. Current drive is nearly doubled which feeds a new output stage with an open loop gain increased by the same factor of two. The sound is more spacious, delicate, and dynamic. The distinctive power meter from the monoblock makes an encore appearance in the stereo amplifier, with a separate indicator needle for each channel. Like the monoblock, the stereo amplifier uses through-hole construction and is hand-built and individually tested in D'Agostino's Arizona facility. The Momentum S250 employs the same chassis as the original with a small aesthetic design change to the copper feature on the faceplate sides. Additionally, the meter now displays a scale appropriate for the greater power output. Learn More

  • Dahlquist DQLP1

    Dahlquist DQLP1

Dahlquist DQLP1 The Dahlquist DQ-LP1 is a unique line-level crossover which combines an electronic Low-Pass filter with a passive High-Pass filter. The LP1 is intended primarily for integrating a subwoofer into an otherwise full range loudspeaker system. It may also be used to bi-amplify a single loudspeaker system where the crossover point is tunable from 40 to 400 Hz. As with other electronic crossovers, the LP1 is connected between the preamplifier and the two power amplifiers; one amplifier feeds the main speaker, the other drives the subwoofer(s). The active Low-Pass section, which feeds the subwoofer amplifier, is continuously variable from 40 to 400 Hz and provides a cut-off rate of 18db per octave. This steep slope is achieved through a non-ringing, staggered arrangement of 6-12-18 db/octave slopes, preserving bass transients. Distortion is exceptionally low, measuring 0.005% THD. Of particular importance in a device of this type is the performance of the High-Pass section which feeds the main power amplifier. Any distortion introduced in this stage will noticeably degrade the important middle and upper frequencies. In order to avoid such degradation, the 6db/octave High-Pass section of the LP1 is purely passive and can be set for any desired crossover frequency by inserting a capacitor and/or resistor into the terminals provided on the LP1's printed circuit board. The front panel frequency control does not effect the High-Pass frequency. Push-button switch S1 allows complete passive defeat of the High-Pass section and muting of the low frequency section to instantly restore the system to single amplifier operation. This combination of active and passive circuitry insures the sharp cut-off and tuneability required to best integrate a subwoofer with a loudspeaker. The Owner's manual provides instructions for the hook-up and tuning of the LP1, including an easy to use chart showing the appropriate combination of resistors &/or capacitors to achieve a variety of crossover points. • Crown Reference 1

    Crown Reference 1

Crown Reference 1 ships to you in 6/2017 Reference I (120 V, 60 Hz models) The Crown® Studio Reference I power amplifier shall be a solid-state two-channel model employing multi-mode (AB+B) grounded bridge(TM) output circuitry with a variable impedance (VZ) power supply for each channel. The outputs shall be switchable as stereo, bridged-mono or parallel-mono modes of operation. The bridged-mono mode shall bridge the outputs to provide increased output voltage. The parallel-mono mode shall parallel the outputs to provide increased output current. The output impedance of each channel shall be less than 10 milliohms in series with less than 2 microhenries in stereo mode. The variable impedance power supplies shall reduce unnecessary voltage across the output devices by automatically switching to a parallel mode when less voltage is required by the output circuitry and to a series mode when more voltage is required. The amplifier shall contain protection circuitry which limits the drive level placed on the output devices before their SOA (Safe Operating Area) is exceeded. This protection circuitry shall calculate the instantaneous voltage across and current through the output devices while factoring in their simulated junction temperatures to predict how close they are to their operating limits. This protection will be called “ODEP.” The amplifier shall contain controlled slew-rate voltage circuitry to protect it against radio frequency interference burnouts. It shall also be protected from current overload at its output stage. The slew rate of the amplifier shall be greater than 30 volts per microsecond in stereo mode. The amplifier shall temporarily go into a stand-by mode if its power transformer becomes excessively hot and shall automatically resume normal operation once it has cooled to a safe operating temperature. Front-panel controls shall include an enable on/off switch and a detented input level control for each channel. Rear-mounted controls shall include a ground lift switch to isolate the signal ground from the chassis ground, a switch which selects between stereo, bridged-mono and parallel-mono modes of operation and a reset switch for the AC mains circuit breaker. • Crestron Professional Intercom Distribution Switcher C2N-IADS30X24

Crestron Professional Intercom Distribution Switcher C2N-IADS30X24

Crestron Professional Intercom Distribution System-Audio C2N-IADS30X24 The C2N-IADS30X24 Intercom Audio Distribution Switcher facilitates the distribution and control of audio intercom signals for up to 22 TPS touchpanels and door stations using inexpensive CAT5E cable. The C2N-IADS30X24 integrates neatly with Crestron's CNX-PAD8A and CNX-BIPAD8 audio distribution processors, enabling voice paging from any microphone-equipped touchpanel to room loudspeakers throughout the house or office, and allowing audio from central AV sources to be distributed to any touchpanel. The C2N-IADS30X24 is built around a fully programmable 30 X 24 audio crosspoint matrix, providing extensive flexibility for the distribution of intercom and other monaural audio signals. Interfaced through 22 bidirectional CAT5 audio ports, the matrix provides complete freedom to route the microphone signal from any one touchpanel or door station to the speakers in another, with real-time control to permit fluid talk/listen (half-duplex) intercom functionality. Crestron offers several touchpanel models equipped with built-in microphones and speakers designed for use with the C2N-IADS30X24. Door stations are easily implemented using the C2N-IIF Intercom Interface (sold separately). Eight unbalanced inputs are also provided to accept signals from the unbalanced room outputs or loop-thru connectors of a Crestron audio distribution processor, or from any stereo sources. Stereo input signals are internally summed to mono. Any input signal may be freely routed to any number of CAT5 outputs. In addition, there are two unbalanced outputs provided for connection to room inputs on the audio distribution processor, allowing microphone and other signals to be routed to any set of room speakers, easily accommodating the most complex zone-paging scheme. Additional configurations can be achieved by interfacing CAT5 audio ports on the C2N-IADS30X24 directly to CAT5 audio ports on the CNX-BIPAD8 and many other Crestron products. A 5-pin connector, paralleled with last CAT5 I/O port, permits interfacing to Crestron's CEN-TIA Telephone Interface Module (sold separately), enabling dial-up paging through the client's phone system, and distribution of door chimes and other sounds through the room loudspeakers. The C2N-IADS30X24 functions as a slave device to any 2-Series control system communicating via the Cresnet control network. Learn More

  • Creek OBH-8 MM Phono PreAmp

    Creek OBH-8 MM Phono PreAmp

Moving Magnet phono stage New old stock Creek OBH-8 Phono Preamplifier Sound A surprisingly neutral phono stage with great microdynamics and superb soundstaging; macrodynamics a bit compressed from forte on up; slight brightness and treble grain. Features Designed for higher-output cartridges; separate power supply can be upgraded; RCA inputs and outputs are not gold plated. Use Plug (in) and play; correct polarity of the power supply is essential for optimum performance; leave on at all times for most consistent sound. Value Despite its unimpressive looks, the OBH-8 delivers a lot of audiophile-approved performance; its price is inexpensive admission into the hallowed halls of high-end vinyl playback. Remember those days when a phono stage was mandatory on a preamp or integrated amplifier? When record stores actually sold records? Like Rip Van Winkle, I had a rude awakening when I bought my Jolida integrated amp a couple of years ago. Suddenly my turntable and cartridge were orphaned, unable to dock with the mother ship. After some creative financing, I was able to spring for a Creek OBH-8 phono stage to fill the void. So far, it has been money well spent. The Creek OBH-8 sure proves that good things come in small packages. The preamp is only 4"W x 2"H x 4"D. The power supply is a separate 24V DC "wall-wart" type, which uses a long cord to plug into the OBH-8. This power supply can be upgraded to improve performance. The front panel (if you can call a 2" by 4" piece of metal a panel) consists of a power switch and green LED. The back has RCA-type connectors for inputs and outputs, and connections for the ground wire and the power supply. My one quibble with these RCAs is they lack gold plating. Inside, all the components are neatly laid out on a little circuit board, with the power switch and the connectors soldered directly to it. The overall gain is 37dB. A version with more gain for low-output cartridges is available from Creek (the OBH-9). The cartridge load can’t be adjusted and is set at 47k ohms and 200pF. The circuitry used in the OBH-8 is the utmost in simplicity. One low-noise bipolar transistor is used for each channel in a single-ended class-A gain stage with zero feedback. Passive equalization is used to obtain a RIAA deviation of +/-0.25%. Learn More

Convergent Audio Technology SL1L Renaissance/ BLACK PATH EDITION w/o Phono

New Black Path Edition with Black Path Caps - Renaissance Black Path Edition. W/O Phono It needs a true connoisseur to list all the past versions of the Convergent Audio Technology's SL-1 preamplifier. What is certain is that right from the very first version 25 years ago it has been considered as one of the coolest preamplifiers in the audio land. The SL-1 Renessaince is its latest incarnation. The SL-1 Renessaince sports an internal switch to set the gain level either to 26dB or 15dB. The LOW gain position is handy when the SL-1 is used with high output sources or high sensitive speakers by moving the volume setting to the area where the dB steps are smaller. It is also little quieter while the HIGH position sounds more dynamic. Another new feature is Audio/Video pass-through possibility. When the unit is turned off the LINE 1 input will be directly connected to MAIN OUT 2, and the SL-1 can be used in home theatre applications without disconnecting anything. The LINE 2 and MAIN OUT 1 are for two channel purists. The third novelty are the new MC stepup transformers about which a bit later. Thanks to the new circuit-board layout the Renaissance's bandwidth extends now to 800kHz compared to the previous 600kHz. The harmonic distortion is claimed to be < 0,0005% fot the line stage, and <0,001% for the phono stage; and the noise level 98dBA (high gain), 109dBA (low gain), and 97dBA phono. Output impedance is 100 ohms. Learn More

  • Convergent Audio Technology SL1L Legend/ BLACK PATH EDITION w/o Phono

Convergent Audio Technology SL1L Legend/ BLACK PATH EDITION w/o Phono

The SL1 Legend takes this uncompromising approach further than the product with which Ken literally started the company, the SL1 preamp, now in its Renaissance version. The two use essentially the same circuit, but in the case of the Legend that circuit is taken to the extreme -- it's a cost-no-object implementation. On the outside, the two look nearly identical, but there are a couple of notable differences. Chief among these is the use of dual volume controls in the Legend instead of separate volume and balance. Both preamps use stepped volume controls, essentially a set of resistors for each setting, but the Legend's 46-position shunt volume controls are more costly than those used for the standard SL1, whose fewer positions cause issues for some owners, as the perfect volume setting can sometimes lie between two "clicks." Not with the Legend; 46 positions should be enough for even the pickiest listeners. This item is without phono Learn More

Learn More

  • Conrad Johnson MF2500

    Conrad Johnson MF2500

Conrad Johnson MF2500 used, very nice condition with original box/pac ki ng We can ship this in your desired voltage Like many Conrad-Johnson designs, the MF2500's higher performance goals have been attained through experience and the refinement of established circuits, not by some magic new topology that's claimed to solve all previously known audio-fidelity problems. Thus the input stage is a standard differential circuit executed with FETs. The second stage comprises a buffered voltage-gain amplifier, and uses bipolar transistors. It drives a regular class-A/B push-pull bipolar output stage, which is direct-coupled to the speaker. The output stage is run at quite a low idle power, which partly explains why the amplifier takes a little time to get up to speed from a cold start (footnote 1). But it does mean that the amplifier does not run too hot to touch. While some of the MF2500's technology is derived from the older MF2300A (reviewed in October 1996), the big change has been from FET to bipolar output devices. In this circuit, at least, bipolars confer greater gain stability with output load and current variations, imparting a more consistent and more dynamic sound quality. The MF2500 has high-current, resin-encapsulated Sanken power transistors: two 2SC3281 and two SA1302 devices are paralleled for each channel's output stage. These transistors have good thermal properties, high-quality electrical connections to their junctions, and are endowed with good safe-operating areas. This means the amplifier can be protected with simple quick-blow fuses. C-J favors a predominantly low-order distortion spectrum in which some second harmonic is designed to dominate the distortion residual, this in the MF2500 courtesy of the input FETs. Minimal loop negative feedback is used, in this case just 12.5dB, or approximately 4x. (Some amplifiers may run with x1000 to x10,000 of feedback.) As Lew Johnson explained, "the more the performance of the basic circuits was improved from the new MF series, the more important was the upgrading of individual component quality. Then negative feedback could be reduced yet again." The MF2500's regulation topology is of Premier quality. For example, the input stage has its own transformer tap stabilized at a voltage higher than the output stage requirement. Discrete open-loop regulators have audiophile-grade polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors. Only the main current reservoirs are electrolytic, but here there is no choice. Voltage-reference and feedback-control resistors are costly metal-foil Vishays. Six 10,000µF Nichicon electrolytics form the central reservoirs for both channels, giving a total of 30,000µF per DC supply phase and ensuring good current delivery at low frequencies. The massive EI-lamination transformer has split secondary sections to feed the various regulators. I also counted no fewer than 22 of C-J's exclusive lead-foil, large-value polystyrene capacitors, plus eight higher-value, audiophile-grade polypropylene caps. Hardware The MF2500's 3/8" alloy front panel is anodized in C-J's traditional gold, while the rest is finished in satin-black textured enamel. The baseplate can be removed to access the underside of the printed circuit board. The only control is a front-panel power switch, and there's no soft start. The heavy transformer is affixed to the right side of the chassis, while the single, external, full-size finned heatsink is to the left. The inputs are single-ended phono sockets, the outputs 5-way binding posts, all gold-plated. Thermal protection is via a self-resetting thermal trip circuit. The power cord is a captive three-core type. Listening I found I preferred to leave the MF2500 on most of the time, its low idle power proving a blessing. The amplifier also benefited from extended break-in. In some respects, the MF2500 gave an understated view of musical events—with casual listening it's possible to dismiss it on grounds of a lack of forthrightness for its rather measured pace, and an almost rich, distant presentation. Yet, over the long term, and along with its even-tempered if slightly sweet tonal balance, it was the very absence of a forced or excitable character, false hardness, or excessive attack that endeared the MF2500 to me. There was a sense of ease; aural fatigue was significantly lower than usual for this class of amplifier. Just when I thought I'd got about as much out of the MF2500 as I was going to get, it got better by stages. Elements of this sound—almost a tube experience—had been dimly evident in earlier solid-state amplifiers from C-J. But some of the necessary tonal consistency, fine textures, vitality, and clarity were not expressed well enough to make those models truly viable alternatives. Their FET output stages suffered from some variations in both clarity and tonal color with reproduced sound level, this to some degree also dependent on the loudspeaker load and the program complexity. In the case of the MF2500, two key aspects have become firmly established. First, this amplifier offered the ability to play all the way to full output with consistent quality. Second, while the MF2500 won't put C-J's Premier Eight A monoblocks out of business, or even the smaller Premier Eleven A, its sound conveyed much of the general nature of a fine tube amplifier—a classic type of moderate negative feedback, wide bandwidth, and linear, push-pull design—coupled with greater dynamic range and sheer load-driving grunt. Tonal colors were natural, never strident, thin, or hard. While the bass didn't have the kind of deeply extended impact of the biggest, most costly reference amplifiers, it was satisfying. Not only was the bass powerful—more than sufficient to do justice to cathedral organ at full stretch, and able to carry the low-frequency presence of a large symphony orchestra—it was also articulate, in terms of both detail and tune-playing. The bass also had a kind of bouncy, springy recovery that lent drive and interest to rhythm bass lines on jazz and classic rock. Through the midrange, the MF2500 had a thermionic tonal poise that appeared to have a payoff in terms of natural image depth and perspective. While the amplifier's transparency was rated fairly well, the natural tonality helped create coherent, focused well-layered images. Stage width also rated above average, if a little more like that of a fine moving-coil cartridge than a CD source. In the upper frequencies, the amplifier remained even tempered, well balanced, and even quite delicately resolved. String tone was nicely presented, and no false edge or breathiness was added to vocal sibilants. In fact, vocals in general were handled with near-tubelike quality and good clarity, and the inner harmonies of massed choir were well read, with well-maintained perspectives. Within that slightly "relaxed" temperament, the MF2500 nevertheless managed to pack quite a punch—this is a bighearted amplifier, and sounds it. As it continued to break-in and I grew more familiar with its balance, musical values asserted themselves. Pace, rhythm, and timing, plus dynamic resolution, were all rated significantly above average. On my personal scoring scale, this amplifier achieved a commendable 22 points, a significantly good result for type and price. Conclusion Conrad-Johnson's MF2500 is a successful product on many grounds. It closely approaches the classic tonal character of a fine tubed amplifier—a C-J hallmark—and holds on to that quality over a great range of output power and possible speaker loading. Not easy to accomplish. It also avoids the cheap, quick thrill of a bright, fast, forward sound. Instead, it builds on quality and depth of performance to achieve its commendable rating. Its sound is musically entertaining without being hyperactive, while its broad, bighearted approach is easy on the ears. All kinds of music were handled with equanimity. In the lab, the MF2500's high output power and good load tolerance were confirmed. The amplifier could dump up to 900Wpc into 2 ohm loads for short-term peaks, and cruise happily at around 300Wpc driving 8 ohm loads. This matches the attainment of significantly more costly amplifiers. Except for the modest channel separation at high frequencies, no test result gave rise to concern. Well-built and well-finished, with effective if old-fashioned circuit protection, the MF2500 idled at quite low power and could be safely left on for extended listening periods. This musically well-balanced powerhouse represents fine dollar value, and wins a warm recommendation. Conrad Johnson ET3SE with SE phono

Conrad Johnson ET3SE with SE phono At conrad-johnson, development of our flagship products has traditionally led to important enhancements of our entry-level offerings. The ET3 preamplifier is a case in point. The ET3 line-stage is a “baby” version of our flagship line-stage preamplifier, the GAT. The family resemblance is much more than skin deep. With voltage gain provided by a triode vacuum-tube, the zero-feedback line-stage circuit of the ET3, along with its DC voltage regulators, closely replicates the circuit of the GAT. Finally, and especially noteworthy, the ET3 features a relay operated discrete stepped attenuator level-control circuit of the type found in the GAT and CT5, absent only the balance control function found in those more costly models. Conrad Johnson ET3SE

This ‘special edition’ preamp, the ET3SE, comes with a big helping of Conrad-johnson’s specialist parts, as does the matching ETPHSE phono stage option. As you’d expect, Conrad -johnson’s favoured Teflon capacitors replace polypropylene types in crucial locations. In the line stage, these include the output coupling bypass, the main storage bypass capacitor and the voltage reference filter capacitor. Many resistors are upgraded to Vishay types and these include the 100ohm input and output damping resistors, and all 26 volume control resistors. Grid load resistors in the line stage are upgraded to Cadduck. Similarly, in the ET3SE phono stage the interstage coupling capacitor, power supply storage capacitor and current source filter are upgraded to Teflon. Again, in the phono stage, the input and output damping resistors are upgraded to Vishay parts. Input and output RCA (phono) connectors are upgraded to a discrete hand-wired type. Rotary volume controls disappeared from Conrad-johnson’s vision years ago, and so the ET3SE fascia carries the now-familiar combination of up-and-down pushbuttons and circular display window. This gives a numeric display of volume settings from 0 to 99, these representing the attenuator’s 0.7dB steps. This resolution is fine enough for any but the most neurotic level-tweaker. This model has no balance control to adjust the relative level of L/R channels, so although the two figures displayed seem to represent the two channels, they can in fact only change in unison. Listed conservatively at 200 watts per channel times five channels, the Classe Audio CA-5200 is what we could call a beast of an amplifier. It mainly operates as a traditional class AB amp but, at lower outputs, the Classe' engineers have figured out a way to make the amps run as a class-A amp (no pun intended), which reportedly reduces some of the noise associated with class AB switching, not that you can hear any audible noise when auditioning the Classe' CA-5200, as this power amp runs very, very quietly. This matched serial number 0161 pair has two aftermarket gold chassis tuning dots on each (from Combak in the picture) that can simply be removed by peeling them off with your fingernail For the more technically inclined, the Encore amplifiers utilize a dual monolithic J-FET input stage and two pairs of 250 watt, metal case, bipolar output devices per channel to produce a whopping 500 watts per channel into 8 ohm load. The principle reason for choosing these devices was, "they [bipolar devices] remain stable with a less complex circuit, requiring less negative feedback and are easier to match to each other than other possible choices for this stage. ‘ As with the original amplifier, the Encore amplifier borrows the Performance's original driver boards that are updated with modern parts. • Celestion SL600 with Stands

    Celestion SL600 with Stands

Celestion SL600 with Stands The Celestion SL600 is a near-twin to the company's SL6, a speaker whose introduction a couple of years ago aroused considerable favorable comment in the audio world. Although the two speakers use the same two drivers and crossover networks, and although they are almost exactly the same size, the SL600 costs nearly twice as much as the SL6. Why is this? Because the SL600, in design and execution, is truly a "high-technology" loudspeaker system. For example, the cabinet material is really exotic: an aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure called "Aerolam," which was originally developed for aircraft floors. Aerolam is characterized by very light weight and high stiffness, both desirable characteristics in a loudspeaker cabinet. Such properties work to eliminate the resonances unavoidable in wooden cabinets, resonances that Celestion engineers believed imparted some slight coloration to the sound of the SL6 (and, for that matter, to any speaker using conventional wooden cabinet constructions). Aerolam's honeycomb sandwich, like any structural material, does have resonances, but because of its high stiffness-to-weight ratio these occur at much higher frequencies than in a wooden cabinet and are less likely to be excited by the woofer in its frequency range. The inside of the SL600 cabinet is also treated with acoustically absorbent material to damp most of the remaining cabinet-wall resonances, which lie in the range of 1 to 3 kHz. The driver design is also unique. For one thing, the aluminum tweeter dome is integral with its voice-coil former, eliminating any possible decoupling effects from conventional glue joints and providing efficient conduction of heat from the voice coil. The woofer cone, made of Kobex PVC plastic, is molded with an integral plastic center cap, replacing the usual glued-on dustcap and providing a single point of attachment for the voice-coil former. One benefit of this unconventional driver design is said to be very high power handling ability. The SL600 is rated for use with up to 100 watts of program material and may be used safely with amplifiers rated at 100 watts or even more if reasonable care is exercised in the choice of playback level. • Cary 306 SACD

    Cary 306 SACD

This is the best CD player they ever made, very musical, original box/packing it was hard to put my finger on exactly why I found the CD 306 so musical, but about its fundamental musicality there was no doubt. It’s easier to describe what the Cary CD 306 isn’t: dry, thin, hard, cold. Find your own antonyms to those descriptors and that’s what the CD 306 is. In addition, the 306 is the Swiss army knife of CD players: It upsamples for output on its analog audio jacks and upsamples for conversion by an outboard processor, acts as a digital-to-analog converter for other digital sources, and decodes HDCD discs. The player is also gorgeous to look at and use, with metalwork that would be at home in much more expensive products. Finally, the attention to detail in the circuit design is exemplary. The fact that Cary went to the trouble and expense of eight DACs and analog output stages so that they could provide separate and optimized signal paths for CD and SACD, as well as fully differential DACs for both formats, says much about the designer’s commitment to sound quality. • Cary 211 mono amplifiers

    Cary 211 mono amplifiers

Top of the line. Cary 211M mono amplifier, used pair in excellent condition original crates and double boxes. Photos are without tubes but you get those packed separately. It is well known that using monoblock amplifiers, as opposed to both channels together as a stereo chassis, is the best way to get powerful and lifelike music. By using separate power supplies that can be much more massive, each amplifier can have more dynamic power and be quieter. Keeping two separate amplifiers also makes any inter-channel crosstalk in the amplifiers impossible, so separation is better, meaning your soundstage and musical imaging will be larger and more well-defined. The simple act of separating the two channels provides a lot of distinct advantages, but also increases the investment because of needing to double up on power supplies and chassis parts. Is this extra expense worth it? One listen to the CAD-211FE will convince you that it most certainly is. With over 70 watts of class-A power, automatically transitioning as needed to over 150 watts in class-AB, this powerhouse will effortlessly drive nearly any speaker to realistic live performance levels. It includes a bias meter on the front panel to help you maintain your amplifier at its peak operating level, and offers both XLR balanced and RCA single-ended inputs to match your system. Fully differentially-balanced construction, zero global feedback, and huge reserves of current and power mean that your system will come alive with all types of music and movies. Learn More

The AV-405 five channel power amplifier was designed specifically for use in home theater surround sound systems. When teamed with one of Carver's superb Dolby Pro Logic components (preamplifier, preamp/tuner, or outboard processor), the AV-405 provides power, flexibility far surpassing any single-unit receiver, yet does so at a comparable cost. With 410 watts of total output (8Ω loads), the AV-405 has ample power reserves for accurately reproducing peaks on digital soundtracks, even when driving low impedance loads. Elevated power output for the center channel, an exclusive Carver feature, provides better handling of dynamic peaks on the dialog tracks as well as more balanced, realistic soundtrack reproduction. The AV-405 shuns production shortcuts common in low-cost surround sound receivers. It employs all discrete circuitry in the output stage for greater long-term reliability and superior response to peak demands for simultaneous high current and high voltage. Robust power supplies ensure that all five channels can be driven to full power simultaneously – not always the case with receivers! In addition, the AV-405 incorporates Power Enhancement CircuitryTM, an exclusive Carver feature which allows higher undistorted volume levels on the rear surround channels. Learn More

  • Cambridge Azure 840 E

    Cambridge Azure 840 E

Cambridge Azure 840 E Very nice condition, original box/packing/remote Azur 840E Pre-amplifier The 840E is a high-end pre-amplifier which uses Cambridge Audio’s new proprietary Terrapin™ modules for unprecedented audio fidelity forming the perfect partner for the accompanying 840W power amplifier. A customisable front panel display means tone controls can be selected and stored by nameable input. Volume, input and tone are also all controlled by highly sophisticated relay driven circuits. Rather than use common op-amps for the critical low level gain stages of the 840E (and 840W) Cambridge Audio instead decided to design its own audiophile amplifier modules. The subject of a separate research and development project these unique modules have been designed with single minded dedication to the very best audio performance possible. Two types exist, the TPA amplifier and TPB buffer module fully optimised for their respective roles. Nicknamed the Terrapins (because of their 10 pins) they add yet another dimension to Cambridge Audio’s commitment to audio excellence. A sophisticated resistor ladder and relay based attenuator for volume (1dB steps) and balance controls allows remarkably accurate volume control with channel balance. Each channel has its own relays and ladder for superb stereo separation and imaging. This kind of feature is normally the preserve of exotic high-end equipment and is relatively unheard of at this price point As the pre-amp has its own power supply, it operates in complete isolation to the power amplifier and does not suffer from any interference, something which is also aided by two balanced inputs. The 840E features an extremely attractive and user friendly front panel display which is customisable to show which input is selected. The Azur 840E makes room for eight inputs, two of which have both fully balanced (XLR) and unbalanced connections, ideal for use with the Azur 840C upsampling CD player. These inputs can be named as desired by the user on the custom-designed display to show CD, MP3, Phono etc. Completing the rear panel is an RS232 control port, and multi-room outputs to connect the 840E to custom installations. This plethora of connections enables complete integration with multi-room entertainment systems including two way interface with touchscreen control panels. Alternatively, the 840E is Incognito Ready™. This means that two additional rooms can access the source components connected to the 840E via Cambridge Audio’s Incognito system amplified keypads and passive speakers or active in-ceiling speakers. An independent Incognito power supply links to the 840E, enabling audio and low voltage power to be transmitted to each Incognito keypad using only one run of CAT5 cable. As with all Azur products, the foundation of the 840E’s excellence is a bespoke chassis. This comprises an incredibly thick 7mm front panel and extruded side panels, both fashioned from aluminium, which combine with a 2mm formed steel base plate and specially designed vibration absorbing feet. The result is an ultra rigid, low resonance, acoustically dampened platform for the electronics to sit in. The 840E is available in silver and comes complete with the latest elegant, slim-line navigator style Azur remote handset offering full control of Azur CD players, Incognito keypads and discrete commands for custom install use. As an additional facet, all Cambridge Audio remotes feature iPod™ Command – which means that basic iPod controls such as volume and track select can be controlled from the comfort of the user’s sofa. This boon requires the use of an Apple or other universal dock. file:///C:/Users/steven/Downloads/Azur%20840E%20User%20Manual%20-%20English%20(1).pdf Learn More

Makes a great CD Transport The CL-25 is the same size and identical in appearance to the CL-20. It is a rather tall box for a DVD player. The extra height is needed to clear a copper-sheet bridge/shield that goes over the top of the transport and main digital circuit board, which also contains the analog output stage. This large board is CAL’s own design and contains the DACs, Pacific Microsonics HDCD filter and a sophisticated analog output stage designed for high-quality sound. This large circuit board mounts on top of the copper bridge/shield, separating it from the digital circuitry and the transport as effectively as if this board had been installed in an external DAC. the basic engine of the two CAL players is manufactured by Matsushita and appears inside DVD players by Panasonic, Denon and others. Of course, in those applications, you get DAC boards and analog output stages on circuit boards the size of a few postage stamps. CAL’s DAC/analog board is very large and fully up to high-end parts quality and design standards. The DVD transport itself has a single laser. You can play single- and double-layer DVDs, audio CDs, HDCDs, video CDs, and 24/96 discs from Classic Records and Chesky. You cannot play CD-Rs or CD-RWs. Learn More

Balanced Audio Technology VK5i Balanced Audio Technology VK-5 Line Preamplifier: Frequency responses: 1.59Hz-1.5MHz (typical: volume control at 11 o'clock); 1.59Hz-240kHz (worst case: full volume); -3dB points. Distortion: 0.02% at 2V RMS output; second harmonic: -72dB; third harmonic: -85dB. Maximum gain: 13dB, balanced or unbalanced. Gain adjustment range: 4dB each channel. Noise: -100dB (unweighted, ref. 2V RMS output). Input impedance: 120k ohms typical, 100k ohms minimum (single-ended). Output impedance: 1100 ohms balanced; 850 ohms single-ended. Maximum output: 40V RMS balanced, 20V RMS single-ended. Overload protection: one main power fuse, electronic internal over-current protection (each channel). Tube complement: eight 6922s, two 5881s. Power consumption: 150W maximum, operating mode; 30W typical, Sleep mode. Dimensions: 19" W by 15.5" D by 5.75" H. Weight: 31 lbs the solution developed by BAT designer Victor Khomenko and his partner Steve Bednarski was to retain the shunt volume control topology of the VK-5, with the same Vishay resistors used as series-pass elements, but to substitute a microprocessor-controlled, discrete, film-resistor network for the VK-5's Noble potentiometer. Four individual circuit boards are used, two per channel in a balanced configuration. The microprocessor then switches-in different sets of resistors to shunt part of the signal to ground, the choice of resistors depending on the desired volume level, which is available from the remote control. Left/right trim continues to be controlled by potentiometers, and is not remote-controllable. As well as incorporating this new method of implementing the shunt volume control, the "i" revision features three other significant changes. Probably the most important is an auto-balance circuit that stabilizes the positive and negative legs of the circuit, providing independence from variations in tube performance or aging (at least within certain limits). Balanced circuits must have each leg of the circuit functioning the same way; any differences introduced by the circuit result in nonlinearities. Learn More

Balanced Audio Technology VK-6200 Balanced Audio Technology’s groundbreaking VK-6200 multichannel power amplifier satisfies the demands of the most sophisticated home-theater system while simultaneously playing music with the characteristic open, uncompromised sound that has become a BAT hallmark. Matching amp and cd also available. http://www.balanced.com/resources/brochures/1998/VK3idesc.pdf this preamp is a real find -- . For a component in this price class, performance at this level and with such an even balance is remarkable. In the months it has sat in my system I never once felt it was holding the rig back. And in case you can’t read between the lines, this sweetie stands as my personal sub-$3000 reference, where I expect it to stay for a long, long time. At this price you can get better detail, or a more pleasing, euphonic sound, but there is simply not a more balanced preamp that I know of for anywhere near the VK-3i’s price. I can see the VK-3i as the control center of true high-end systems where each component costs more than it. In short, the BAT VK-3i is an affordable classic if I’ve ever heard one. Learn More

B&W FPM6 onwall speakers With an enclosure height to match the height of 60-inch plasma screens, the FPM6 is the largest model in the FPM Series. Compared to the other models, its enclosure is not only longer, it's wider too, which allows the use of two larger Kevlar® cone bass/midrange drivers each side of the Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter. Higher output level capability and greater bass extension result, but timbre matching allows complete freedom to mix different models for left and right front, centre and surround if desired. Freedom and flexibility extend to the four possible mounting options. Use the supplied wall bracket if no tilting of the speaker is needed. If it is, use an Omnimount® type 20.0 or other compatible bracket to get up to 10º of downward tilt. If using a tabletop stand for your screen, simply do the same with the speakers, using the optional table stand. Finally, there is an optional floor stand that supports the speaker at the ideal listening height. Learn More

Conclusion: The B&W Matrix 800 redefines the art of loudspeaker design. To this end, it goes far beyond anything else currently available, regardless of price or size. While I can't imagine anyone not being impressed with the sheer dynamic capabilities and enormous soundstage of this speaker, it is far too demanding of time and ancillary electronics for the casual listener. Musically, it has no peers. The B&W 800 is the ultimate musicians' reference transducer, retrieving every nuance of the recorded performance. In fact, I'm putting my money where my music is, and buying the review pair. So if you want the best, and are searching for that elusive dream of the absolute, there is nothing, short of the real thing, that will bring you closer to live music. Audioquest Diamondback XLR or RCA interconnects (many available in 1 or 2 meter pair) NEW!

AudioQuest Perfect Surface Copper, Air-Tube Insulation, and Triple-Layer Shielding Ensure the Best Sound for Your Dollar Excellent resolution and dynamics coupled with an even tonal balance make Diamondback a great choice for all music lovers and audiophiles on a budget. AudioQuest’s PSC copper conductors get air tubes, triple balanced geometry and welded connectors making Diamondback ultra-smooth and extremely resolving. Many sophisticated design techniques, superior materials, and an exceptional termination system combine to make AudioQuest Diamondback possible. The results have put the Diamondback at the top of any price-to-performance list by anyone who demands proper cables, yet cannot spend a fortune. Now at our special price, Diamondback is a stellar value. Don't miss out. "The Diamondback has a discerning and revealing treble with good timing and separation...[Diamondback is] capable of excellent sound quality because it melds the vocals and music with authority. It is never out of control..." – HiFi World Diamondback is Triple-Balanced. This means there are three identical insulated conductors, in addition to a separate conductor underneath the 100% coverage foil shield. When used with XLR connectors and balanced electronics, the two positive signals (inverting and non-inverting) and the negative, all get the same low-distortion conducting path. The shield is attached to chassis ground through the case of the XLR, providing extremely effective shielding without contaminating the quality of the negative conducting path. When Diamondback is fitted with RCA plugs, two conductors are used together for the much higher potential across the negative connection, providing a substantial performance advantage. The shield is only attached at one end, providing total shield coverage without compromising the negative conducting path. Conductors: All of Diamondback’s conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Diamondback’s very clean sound. Metal: PSC (Perfect Surface Copper) has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal processing technology protects the wire’s surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low distortion conductor. For fifteen years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by this huge leap in performance. PSC clearly outperforms previous AQ metals that cost over ten times as much. Insulation: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation, circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Diamondback uses air filled FPE (Foam Polyethylene) insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy, and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in FPE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials. Cold-Weld System: Novel plug design enables a perfect heat-free connection between cable and plug. XLR plugs are also available. Diamondback’s gold plated RCA plugs use a patented design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of for its machinability. A combination of these major ingredients, and many more subtle details add up to explain how Diamondback can sound so clean, clear and dynamic. Learn More

  • Audeze The King - Bascom King design Amp 110 volt and 220 volt

Audeze The King - Bascom King design Amp 110 volt and 220 volt

The King The King Headphone It began when the Audeze team met the legendary electronics designer Bascom King in his design lab. Bascom has designed acclaimed amplifiers for Infinity, Marantz, Constellation Audio, PS Audio and others. He demoed a prototype headphone amplifier that so impressed everyone that they signed Bascom on the spot to develop the new headphone amplifier exclusively for Audeze. The King’s circuitry is very different from the typical complementary output topology; it uses the same polarity N-channel MOSFET outputs as these are more alike and complementary than N- and P-channel MOSFETs. Just before the output stage is a two-stage differential amplifier using a dual-triode tube for the input stage followed by a P-channel MOSFET differential driver stage. The driver stage supplies complementary drive to the N-channel output devices. Overall negative feedback is taken back to the input stage to include the input triode in the feedback loop. The circuit is DC-coupled from input to output and a servo control circuit keeps the output DC offset to within millivolts of zero. The overall symmetry of the circuitry eliminates most even-order harmonic distortion. The result is a low impedance, low distortion, wide frequency response output with immense musical transparency, a real emotional experience. Learn More
