Makes a great CD Transport The CL-25 is the same size and identical in appearance to the CL-20. It is a rather tall box for a DVD player. The extra height is needed to clear a copper-sheet bridge/shield that goes over the top of the transport and main digital circuit board, which also contains the analog output stage. This large board is CAL’s own design and contains the DACs, Pacific Microsonics HDCD filter and a sophisticated analog output stage designed for high-quality sound. This large circuit board mounts on top of the copper bridge/shield, separating it from the digital circuitry and the transport as effectively as if this board had been installed in an external DAC. the basic engine of the two CAL players is manufactured by Matsushita and appears inside DVD players by Panasonic, Denon and others. Of course, in those applications, you get DAC boards and analog output stages on circuit boards the size of a few postage stamps. CAL’s DAC/analog board is very large and fully up to high-end parts quality and design standards. The DVD transport itself has a single laser. Theta timelinque box and power supply missing Timebase Linque Conditioner Originally, there was only one method available to connect a CD player / transport to an outboard D to A converter, that being coaxial. The mass-market manufacturers then produced players with the inferior TosLink plastic fiber optic output. AT&T glass fiber optics also became available as a means to interconnect digital equipment. All of these termination methods posed a problem for people trying to buy components that would interface with each other. The Timebase Linque Conditioner was designed to solve these problems. It accepted TosLink and coaxial inputs and output coaxial and optionally AT&T or Theta's Laserlinque. It also contained extensive re-clocking circuitry to combat the deleterious effects of jitter. Poor quality transports still pervaded the market, reducing the effective quality level Theta's D to As could offer. The Timebase Linque Conditioner ameliorated some of the problems. It was even found to improve the sound of our then best combination, the Data III / Generation V. All of the digital-to-analog converters up until that time used integrated circuits (ICs) called op-amps, for the critical current-to-voltage conversion that occurs following the DAC, and for the output buffers. At that time, integrated circuit chips generally were used as cost-efficient compromises, which lowered the quality of components that depended on them, in comparison with equivalent circuits made up of discrete elements on a circuit board. After about a year of research, a new analog section was developed for the Generation III, based entirely on discrete class-A bipolar transistor. The standard high-gloss Pioneer Elite cosmetics are clearly evident, but more significantly, the weight—nearly 35 lbs—is a surprise. This first impression of robust construction isn't misleading. A look inside reveals solid workmanship, including extensive use of copper and copper-clad parts for the chassis rear and bottom, internal partitions, and parts of the player mechanism. The DV-09 sports all the important features currently offered by today's best DVD players and then some. These include 10-bit video D/A converters, component-video outputs, a complete complement of composite and S-video jacks, and digital and analog audio outputs. The DV-09 plays DVDs, CDs, and Video CDs, but not CD-Rs; in addition, it should not be confused with Pioneer's combi players (no laserdisc playback here).
