  • Conrad Johnson Act 2 series 2 with warranty

Conrad Johnson Act 2 series 2 with warranty

Conrad Johnson Act 2 series II with Conrad Johnson one year warranty. Brand new factory tubes will be provided. This will be shipped in your desired voltage at no additional charge C-J incorporated the single-stage regulation into the ACT2 Series 2 and also replaced polystyrene capacitors in a few crucial areas—the tube bias circuits and the AC input bypass—with Teflon capacitors. "They are hideously expensive," Johnson said, "but quality polystyrene caps are simply unavailable these days. The only choices left are lower-quality polystyrene, polypropylene, and Teflon. Since we're about sound quality, we decided that if that meant we had to sell products that cost more in order to sound better, we would have to do that. We just weren't willing to downgrade the products to keep the prices in 'line' with an arbitrary price point." The ACT2 Series 2 also includes an internal mechanical shield to further reduce the residual noise, making it significantly quieter, according to Johnson. The ACT2 Series 2 lists for $16,500, which, Johnson says, reflects the costlier parts and "the passing of a few years since the introduction of the ACT2." Original ACT2s can be upgraded to Series 2 status, but "that's an expensive process because we have to essentially take the preamp apart and build a new one. Labor costs and parts costs conspire to make this costly: It's $5500, and a bargain at that." ACT2 Series 2 Learn More

  • Proceed AVP by Mark Levinson (Madrigal)

Proceed AVP by Mark Levinson (Madrigal)

Proceed AVP $5000 surround processor, Made by Madrigal, the same people who manufactured Mark Levinson. Very nice condition, used of course Proceed AVP AV Preamplifier Print E-mail Home Theater Preamplifiers AV Preamps Written by Jerry Del Colliano Monday, 01 November 1999 Proceed AVP AV Preamplifier Introduction The Proceed AVP is a full function audio/video preamp that combines audio preamplification, digital conversion, broadcast-quality video switching and surround sound decoding into a highly refined high-end gem. Priced at $4,995 (S-Video version), the Proceed AVP comes equipped with DTS, AC3, Pro Logic, THX and numerous other surround fields for both music and video playback. The digital section of the AVP uses Burr Brown 1702 20-bit Multibit DACs for the left and right channels and 1-bit, 24-bit compatible AKM Delta-Sigma DACs for the center, surround, aux and subwoofer channels. A dealer-provided software update will be available in the near future to get your AVP ready for the 24-bit 96 kHz performance. The AVP comes equipped with seven digital and eight analog highly flexible, assignable inputs. A special version of the AVP can be ordered in order to take up to four S-VHS inputs, as well as four composite inputs. A standard AVP comes with six composite video inputs. During the set-up process, you decide which audio and or video device is to go into what input. For example, you can set the primary and secondary input method; a DVD player would take a digital input first and possibly an analog second. The set-up process is not a cakewalk, but it is logical and intuitive. The AVP manual is among the best I have ever read, in that it is complete and easy to understand for the end user. The faceplate of the Proceed AVP has a non-traditional design that incorporates a sexy modern look with useful buttons in unconventional placements. The controls for the loudspeaker level adjusters are curved around the beautifully milled volume knob. This makes lots of sense in that the volume knob has a dual purpose: it also controls the surround parameters when desired. The design for the Proceed AVP’s remote is unique in that, unlike its competitors, it fits easily in your hand and features only nine buttons. Each button is within reach of your thumb for both left- and right-handers. The three main buttons toggle up and down smoothly. However, I frequently found myself making the mistake of switching my inputs when I wanted to lower the volume. Ultimately, I added a hand-held touch screen remote to control every component in my system, as well as to facilitate macros. Music on the Proceed AVP Proceed’s tie into the Mark Levinson line of electronics is evident as soon as you audition music through the AVP. The AVP is an excellent preamp, worthy to replace many a high-end two-channel contender on the market. Its 20-bit DAC sections for the right and left channels also qualify the AVP as a replacement for the digital conversion found on all but the best CD players and DACs currently on the market. In my theater application, two-channel music playback has a distinct problem in that my left and right speakers (M&K THX monitors) are installed into a bookcase. The center image is challenged, to put it politely, by a 35-inch Sony XBR tube television set with another M&K THX monitor blue tacked (with that gooey Silly Putty-like stuff) to the top. The musical result is there is very little blending of the left and right stereo speakers (the blend is known as center imaging). After 50+ hours of listening, I tried an experiment that would be considered blasphemy by some audio purists. I switched a two-channel CD over to one of the AVP’s surround modes, L/R Surround. The cut "Lung" from Hooverphonic’s Blue Wonder Power Milk (Epic) provided some of the best results. The center channel immediately solved the center imaging problem while the rears brought a surround sensation that, while obviously not discrete 5.1, was cool and far more musically involving than the traditional two-channel mode. Surprisingly, the L/R Surround mode was not shrill or cheap-sounding. Was it as good a DTS 20-bit CD? No, but with under 200 DTS and Dolby music titles currently on the market, using your AVP to take your music to the next level must be considered a major plus. The AVP really flexes its muscles for music in 5.1 surround especially on Boyz II Men’s "Thank You" from their II record (DTS Entertainment). Boyz II Men is a great group for discrete 5.1 surround. With four singers, you can experience musical trickery that swirls, pops and creates three-dimensional effects we only aspired to in the glory days of two-channel. On "Thank You," the background vocal parts have the type of resolution and three-dimensional pop you’d expect to get from a $20,000 high end loudspeaker, imaged to the highest level. The musical experience was all-consuming, far beyond anything you can get from mere stereo. On Steely Dan’s "Hey Nineteen" from Gaucho (DTS Entertainment) you’re hearing a lesser recording mixed into 5.1. The cymbals sounded harsh and a bit shrill, but Michael McDonald’s signature backup vocals were well placed in the rear channels. The song performance through the Proceed AVP was more exciting than I have ever heard it on my reference music system, but it lacked the resolution of the more modern Boyz II Men recording. The Movies One critical, often overlooked aspect of an AV preamp is the importance of a high-quality video distribution and switching mechanism. The AVP uses a broadcast-quality video switching video section capable of passing an HDTV signal with an output bandwidth of 65 MHz. The result of the careful attention paid to the video performance is evident on sources such as scene three of Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery (New Line – DTS LD). Here Austin (Mike Myers) does his mod dance sequences fully clad in a crushed blue velvet suit and accompanied by one of the most vibrantly dressed casts ever caught on film. On lesser AV preamps, the blacks seem faded and the brilliant colors look muted. On the AVP, the colors pop with unparalleled beauty and the blacks are extremely dark. With the Proceed AVP, you’ll enjoy more than just amazing audio effect – the picture is simply wonderful. For an all-out test of the surround capabilities of the AVP, I looked to Tomorrow Never Dies (MGM-UA DVD - AC3) the latest James Bond video release. Chapter 20 has two phenomenal tests of a high performance home theater. First, as Pierce Brosnan’s Bond and actress Michelle Yeoh’s Wai Lin try to escape via motorcycle while being chased by Chinese assassins in Range Rovers and a helicopter, the duo create a trap in a crowded marketplace. The assassins’ gunshots accidentally set off an entire truckload of fireworks. The surround effect on a lesser system can become blurred, seeming like a sheer wall of sound attacking your ears. On the Proceed AVP, all five of the main loudspeakers are lit up with a dynamic yet detailed explosion that all of a sudden blooms into one of the most amazing home theater moments I have ever heard. The second test in chapter 20 of Tomorrow Never Dies is at the end of the scene where Bond and Wai Lin are seemingly trapped by the helicopter, which is looming in on the two heroes as they are backed into a dead-end corner. In true Bond fashion, the agents escape by looping a metal laundry wire to the landing gear of the helicopter and immediately taking off. In order to flee their pursuers, Bond and Wai Lin need to slide the motorcycle under the rotating copter blades and jump into a water well. As they pull off this seemingly impossible act, you hear the most tremendous swirling effect with the helicopter blades, coupled with pounding bass. The two dive into the water well and the helicopter explodes with an impact I have never heard before in my theater. The next scene soothingly cues Bond and Wai Lin taking a makeshift shower in an alley way, with the delicate trickle of water strikingly juxtaposed against the preceding cacophony of a helicopter crash. The Downside The Proceed AVP has three balanced audio outputs for left, right and center loudspeakers, while the Proceed Amp 5 five- channel power amplifier accepts five balanced inputs. I could understand if there wasn’t enough room for two or three more balanced jacks on the back of the AVP, but there are in fact two more balanced outputs for zone II operation. I simply don’t understand why the AVP would give up balanced performance for the rears and subs. The left and right DACs are 20-bit, but the rest are 1-bit. With a future software upgrade the AVP will be able to do 24/96Khz. With the growing importance of full range 5.1 sound for music, video and DVD, it would have been nice to see the highest quality DACs throughout the AVP. Conclusion The Proceed AVP is the best value in all of the AV preamps. At $4995, it is far from cheap, but it has all of the features and high-end performance you’d expect from a Madrigal product; you would need to spend upwards of $15,000 to get anything comparable elsewhere. The fit and finish is great and the ease of use is much better than average. As a two-channel preamp, the Proceed AVP could replace nearly all of the existing preamps on the market even if you saved the surround features for future home theater upgrades. The Proceed AVP is a home run of a product. You’ll be proud to own one as the centerpiece of your high performance multi-media system. Learn More

  • Cambridge Azure 840 E

    Cambridge Azure 840 E

Cambridge Azure 840 E Very nice condition, original box/packing/remote Azur 840E Pre-amplifier The 840E is a high-end pre-amplifier which uses Cambridge Audio’s new proprietary Terrapin™ modules for unprecedented audio fidelity forming the perfect partner for the accompanying 840W power amplifier. A customisable front panel display means tone controls can be selected and stored by nameable input. Volume, input and tone are also all controlled by highly sophisticated relay driven circuits. Rather than use common op-amps for the critical low level gain stages of the 840E (and 840W) Cambridge Audio instead decided to design its own audiophile amplifier modules. The subject of a separate research and development project these unique modules have been designed with single minded dedication to the very best audio performance possible. Two types exist, the TPA amplifier and TPB buffer module fully optimised for their respective roles. Nicknamed the Terrapins (because of their 10 pins) they add yet another dimension to Cambridge Audio’s commitment to audio excellence. A sophisticated resistor ladder and relay based attenuator for volume (1dB steps) and balance controls allows remarkably accurate volume control with channel balance. Each channel has its own relays and ladder for superb stereo separation and imaging. This kind of feature is normally the preserve of exotic high-end equipment and is relatively unheard of at this price point As the pre-amp has its own power supply, it operates in complete isolation to the power amplifier and does not suffer from any interference, something which is also aided by two balanced inputs. The 840E features an extremely attractive and user friendly front panel display which is customisable to show which input is selected. The Azur 840E makes room for eight inputs, two of which have both fully balanced (XLR) and unbalanced connections, ideal for use with the Azur 840C upsampling CD player. These inputs can be named as desired by the user on the custom-designed display to show CD, MP3, Phono etc. Completing the rear panel is an RS232 control port, and multi-room outputs to connect the 840E to custom installations. This plethora of connections enables complete integration with multi-room entertainment systems including two way interface with touchscreen control panels. Alternatively, the 840E is Incognito Ready™. This means that two additional rooms can access the source components connected to the 840E via Cambridge Audio’s Incognito system amplified keypads and passive speakers or active in-ceiling speakers. An independent Incognito power supply links to the 840E, enabling audio and low voltage power to be transmitted to each Incognito keypad using only one run of CAT5 cable. As with all Azur products, the foundation of the 840E’s excellence is a bespoke chassis. This comprises an incredibly thick 7mm front panel and extruded side panels, both fashioned from aluminium, which combine with a 2mm formed steel base plate and specially designed vibration absorbing feet. The result is an ultra rigid, low resonance, acoustically dampened platform for the electronics to sit in. The 840E is available in silver and comes complete with the latest elegant, slim-line navigator style Azur remote handset offering full control of Azur CD players, Incognito keypads and discrete commands for custom install use. As an additional facet, all Cambridge Audio remotes feature iPod™ Command – which means that basic iPod controls such as volume and track select can be controlled from the comfort of the user’s sofa. This boon requires the use of an Apple or other universal dock. file:///C:/Users/steven/Downloads/Azur%20840E%20User%20Manual%20-%20English%20(1).pdf Learn More

  • LAMM LL2.1

    LAMM LL2.1

The LL2.1 is a direct replacement for the LL2 preamplifier. The LL2.1 features the following upgrades and modifications as compared to the LL2: •addition of a built-in remote on/off for LAMM amplifiers •introduction of the attenuation for gain reduction by 15 dB •some new parts •new knobs •slight changes in schematic diagram Model LL2.1 is the next generation of the original LL2 which was the first in the line of LAMM vacuum tube preamplifiers. Unique topology and application of the most advanced technological resources and processes bring the LL2.1 very close to the threshold of excellence in sound reproduction. A main distinction of the LL2.1 from any other comparable type of preamplifiers is its almost inaudible sonic signature. When connected to an appropriate type of power amplifiers, especially LAMM amplifiers, it assures the recreation of a three-dimensional soundstage without boundaries and limitations. 1 The LL2.1 features a topology that brings out the most natural sound performance in the audio path, as well as graceful and sophisticated design. It employs a pure class A operation from input to output; all stages are single-ended. The preamplifier's audibly neutral power supply features a full-wave vacuum rectifier. This rectifier, together with a choke-containing filter, allows to practically get rid of the hum and buzz and, in the end, to ensure the verity of dynamic range without coloration. Other features include 3 inputs; 1 tape loop; 2 sets of outputs; front panel muting switch; attenuator for gain reduction by 15 dB; built-in remote on/off for LAMM power amplifiers; protection circuitry coupled with automatic mute at turn on/off. Each preamplifier is carefully hand-crafted with matched components of the highest quality, some of which include military graded low noise DALE metal film resistors; NOBLE potentiometers; ELECTROCUBE and ROEDERSTEIN film capacitors; high frequency switching grade CORNELL DUBILIER electrolytic capacitors; and specially selected long life vacuum tubes. The LL2.1 features a custom-designed power transformer. 1The LL2.1 is available in two versions: standard and deluxe, both of which utilize identical chassis, PC-board and parts. In deluxe version, the power supply energy storage is approximately twice that of the standard version (four identical light-blue capacitors next the choke; only two of these are installed in regular version -- see first detail image insert). Also, in deluxe version, all film capacitors in critical paths are paralleled by polystyrene capacitors of the highest available quality (yellow capacitors on two images -- right and below). • LAMM LP2.1

    LAMM LP2.1

Model LP2.1 is the next generation of the original LP2 -- the first in the line of LAMM phono preamplifiers. The LP2.1 features the following upgrades and modifications in comparison to the LP2: •introduction of many technical solutions that had been implemented in the LP1 Signature (just like the ML2.2 single-ended power amplifier derived many of its technical solutions from the ML3 Signature power amplifier); •introduction of the new tubes: 6C3P and 6C45P-E (same tubes that used in the LP1 Signature phono preamplifier), and corresponding adjustments in the circuitry; •significantly reduced output impedance; •new parts that had been developed by various manufacturers since the introduction of the LP2; •new pc-board material •super low noise power transformer The LP2.1 is a dual-mono vacuum tube phono preamplifier with two electrically and mechanically separated channels. It features a topology that brings out the most natural sound performance in the audio path, as well as graceful and sophisticated design. The preamplifier operates in a pure class A mode from input to output. High-current drive capability, in combination with unique single-ended class A circuitry, enable the preamplifier to drive any cable and any reasonable real world load, while maintaining its practically inaudible sonic signature. When connected to the appropriate type of electronics, and especially LAMM amplifiers and preamplifiers, it assures the extraordinary transparency of perceived sound and recreation of a three dimensional soundstage in the home, recording studio, etc. without boundaries and limitations. All amplification stages utilize high transconductance very low noise high-current vacuum triodes. No loop feedback is employed. The LP2.1 features a very accurate passive RIAA EQ network. The preamplifier's audibly neutral power supply features a full-wave vacuum rectifier which, together with a choke-containing filter, helps reduce the hum and buzz to almost negligible levels and, in the end, ensures the verity of dynamic range without coloration. Solid-state analog voltage regulator is used as a heater supply. Other features include two sets of inputs for each channel and gain/selector switches for MM and MC cartridges. A unique electronic protection circuitry mutes the outputs until the LP2.1 has stabilized upon being turned on; it also automatically mutes the preamplifier in case the AC line voltage drops or is interrupted, as well as at the turn-off of the unit. Each preamplifier is carefully crafted with the hand selected components of the highest quality, some of which include military graded low noise DALE metal film resistors; 1% tolerance RCD wire-wound resistors; ELECTROCUBE and VISHAY/ROEDERSTEIN film capacitors; high frequency switching grade CORNELL DUBILIER electrolytic capacitors; FISCHER “Camac” connectors; specially selected military-graded low-noise long-life vacuum tubes; and a custom-designed super low noise power transformer. The LP2.1 is especially effective in large systems with speakers of reference quality that make it possible to recreate the unique qualities of LPs. The LP2.1 is designed to be used as part of the truly hi-end audio system and is capable of reproducing the studio- or life-recorded musical event with reality approaching that of the concert hall. It is also designed for use in the recording studios as a reference preamplifier for the purpose of controlling the recording process itself and the quality of LPs. The LP2.1 is available in two versions: standard and deluxe. In the deluxe version, the power supply stores more energy, all film capacitors in signal path are bypassed by polystyrene capacitors of the highest available quality, and a custom-designed massive damping panel significantly reduces all types of mechanical vibrations which, in turn, leads to a slightly more extended, coherent and natural bass reproduction. The LP2.1 works on all world AC line voltages. Learn More

  • LAMM L2-L2.1 – Reference

    LAMM L2-L2.1 – Reference

Model L2 Reference represents top of the line in LAMM hybrid and solid-state audio equipment. It is one of the best creations of its designer's professional career--a result of years of intensive research directed at attaining the most accurate reproduction of recorded music. Unique topology and application of the most advanced technological resources and processes bring the L2 near the threshold of excellence in sound reproduction. A main distinction of the L2 from any other comparable type of preamplifiers is its almost inaudible sonic signature. When connected to an appropriate type of power amplifiers, and especially LAMM amplifiers, it assures the extraordinary transparency of perceived sound and recreation of a three-dimensional soundstage in the home, recording studio, etc., without boundaries and limitations. The L2 features a topology that brings out the most natural sound performance in the audio path, as well as graceful and sophisticated design. Its unique circuitry utilizing specially selected super-linear high voltage MOS-FET transistors ensures a class A operation from input to output, with no overall feedback at any stage. All stages, including high current output buffers, are single-ended. A unique electronic protection circuit enables manual muting of the outputs until the preamplifier has stabilized after a turn-on; it also enables functioning of the preamplifier in a "muting" mode during operation and automatic switching to muting in case the AC line voltage drops or is interrupted. Other features include 3 inputs; 1 tape loop; output signal phase switch; balanced and single-ended outputs; and built-in remote on/off for LAMM power amplifiers. The L2 has a separate power supply that utilizes a choke contained filter, vacuum tube rectifier and voltage regulator. Special care was taken in designing a high voltage (+350V) high speed vacuum tube voltage regulator. Using this voltage regulator, in conjunction with other technical aspects, enables the reproduction of tiniest nuances and three-dimensional subtleties in the music palette (provided that such details had not been lost in a recording process). A somewhat unusual combination of high voltage vacuum tube power supply and superlinear high voltage MOS-FETs allows to attain an enormously large output swing while retaining practically constant harmonic contents of the signal with an absolute dominance of the second harmonic. In designing the L2 special attention was directed toward optimization of the output impedance of the preamplifier with an aim of attaining practically full independence of the output impedance from frequency, as well as to allow the preamplifier to drive (without audible sonic degradation) significant capacitive loads created by many modern interconnect cables. Each preamplifier is carefully hand-crafted with matched components of the highest quality, some of which include military graded low noise DALE metal film resistors; unique TKD stepped potentiometers (41 detents); PRC wire wound resistors; ELECTROCUBE and ROEDERSTEIN film capacitors; high frequency switching grade CORNELL DUBILIER electrolytic capacitors; specially selected long life vacuum tubes; high quality heavy duty gold-plated RCA connectors; and gold-plated NEUTRIC XLR connectors. The preamplifier power supply features a custom-designed super-low noise toroidal power transformer. AC voltage is filtered by special RFI power line filter. Summing up the above, we take the liberty in stating that we have been able to create a preamplifier with practically no sonic signature, of course, taking into consideration the fundamental limitations inherent in reproduction of live music by electronic means. The L2 works on all world AC line voltages (100/120/220/230/240V). Learn More
